Strange and Bizarre Fish Stories

People who enjoy fishing also seem to be intrigued by stories that relate to fishing. While there are always those about ‘the one that got away’, these go beyond that realm and enter into the bizarre and even creepy.

Although salmon and trout are known for their incredible abilities to jump as well as travel long distances, in England, there was a trout farm that was experiencing the disappearance of fish from their local pond. Assuming it was a thief, they set up security cameras and were then astounded to view the video of the European brown trout jumping the three foot high water stream that was pouring the nearby streams fresh water.

Fish are known to swallow a number of unusual things. A marine biologist has opened fish to discover such items as a cod that swallowed another cod with a radio tag, a cod that swallowed a soda can from Russia, a halibut that swallowed a whole puffin, a pike that swallowed a baby beaver, a larger halibut that swallowed a bear paw and a Florida grouper that swallowed a sand anchor. One of the best stories is from a fishing expedition in Costa Rica. A marlin was caught and when it was gutted the stomach contents included three soft, long packages that were wrapped in duct tape. The fisherman was offered $90,000 on the spot, without any of the packages being opened.

Stories show up from all over the globe regarding a ‘rain of fish’. While some of these tales can be attributed to tornadoes and other weather conditions that scoop up fish and then include them with a downpour, not all are as easily explained. In Honduras, Yoro they experience this condition around twice per year and this town is over 150 miles from any ocean. In the 1970’s a National Geographic crew witness the rain of fish and confirmed the condition. All of the fish that fall are blind and scientists believe that there may be an underground cave system that floods the area during high storm seasons.
